Romance Book Review – Fragile by Shiloh Walker

After suffering an injury on the frontlines, Luke Quinn decides to leave the Special Forces and his brother behind. He eventually becomes an emergency room doctor in Kentucky. The adrenaline rush and constant challenges he is faced with everyday remind him of his previous life as a Ranger. Its only when the pretty social worker, Devon Manning walks through the doors that he senses any discontent. His heart never beats the same when she is by his side and the ache of loneliness that never seems to go away lessens in her presence.

Devon works tirelessly on behalf of misused children. Her own painful past keeps her motivated and working hard. From babies to teenagers, Devon is their champion and rescues them from unsafe situations. She respects Dr. Quinn and the gentle way he has with her charges. No matter the situation, whether it is a teenage prostitute or a young junkie, the doctor is always compassionate and respectful. The chemistry is there but the work schedules in both their lives is a frustrating hindrance. After many missed opportunities Luke finally gets his chance to spend more time with Devon when he sees her in a restaurant. They spend the evening together that does not go as well as he would have hoped. He ends up making a fool out of himself and fears his chance with the social worker is over.

Devon can’t deny her attraction but she is hesitant to become involved in a relationship. Her life is already full and hectic but she is compelled to give Luke a second chance when she realizes that being with him makes her happy. They begin a journey together that eventually leads them down a path to real love. Things begin to go astray when someone decides to interfere with their lives and threaten their happiness. As such, Luke and Devon become caught in a dangerous game of revenge.

Fragile, is a story that inspires courage and hope. The tie between vulnerability and strength is highlighted skillfully and the reader is drawn in easily by the complicated and relatable relationship Luke and Devon have. Shiloh Walker has once again created a story that is both dark and uplifting.
